Press release -

Sir Ivan Lawrence QC Joins Fred. Olsen Christmas Cruise

Fred. Olsen’s Christmas cruise to the Canary Islands aboard Boudicca will include a very distinguished guest. Joining the company of cruise D1028 – a fourteen-night cruise leaving Liverpool on 21st December 2010 – as VIP Guest Speaker will be former MP, renowned barrister and author, Sir Ivan Lawrence QC.

Born in Brighton in the 1930s, Sir Ivan’s stellar career has taken him to the top of the legal profession, appearing in over 80 murder trials, including some of the UK’s most notorious cases – such as those of serial killer Denis Nilsen and the Kray Twins – and a Yugoslav war crimes trial in The Hague.  He was also Conservative MP for Burton-on-Trent for 23 years, and was knighted in 1992.

Now a broadcaster and frequent contributor to national newspapers and magazines, Sir Ivan has written his fascinating biography, My Life of Crime. Guests aboard the Boudicca Christmas cruise will have the opportunity to attend one of Sir Ivan’s thought-provoking talks on his life and experiences, and purchase signed copies of his book. As well as giving an amazing, ‘behind-the-scenes’ glimpse of the workings of justice, Sir Ivan’s book also provides an insight into life in the corridors of the House of Commons during the Thatcher years.

The ‘Canary Christmas’ cruise provides a gloriously relaxed and warm-weather Christmas at sea. Boudicca departs from Liverpool on 21st December 2010, and visits Leixoes (for Oporto), home of Portugal’s famed port industry, then cruises onto the balmy waters of the Canaries, where she calls at Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, Tenerife, La Palma, and finally the garden island of Madeira, before returning to Liverpool.
Christmas Day itself is spent at sea, with all the traditional Christmas trimmings, while for New Year’s Eve Boudicca will be in Funchal, where guests can enjoy spectacular firework displays. Prices for this cruise start from £1,991 per person, based on two adults sharing an outside twin cabin, Grade ‘E’.

The price includes all meals and entertainment on board, and port taxes.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

At Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines we are very proud of our smaller ships – Bolette, Borealis and Balmoral - and the imaginative and unusual itineraries they allow us to offer. Every cruise is hand-crafted from scratch by our team of in-house Journey Planners to make sure you are not only visiting the best destinations, but at the best time to experience them.

For us, it’s not just about where we go but how we take you there. We put as much time into planning scenic cruising as we do in choosing the destinations themselves. On board, our Signature Experiences showcase the history, culture, nature and flavours of the destinations you’ll visit – from Treats of the Region, where you can enjoy local delicacies, to our Sky at Sea star-gazing sessions where you can relax with a hot toddy out on deck while our astronomer talks you through the night sky.

Plus, with each ship carrying 1,300 guests or less, our ships are small enough for us to offer a warm, friendly and personal service where nothing is ever too much trouble, as we visit a host of exciting ports in every corner of the globe.
