Children’s art launches North Dulwich station partnership

Children of Dulwich Hamlet Junior School helped Southern launch its latest station partnership this morning (Monday 16 October) by celebrating a platform art display at North Dulwich.

North Dulwich in south London is now the 67th station to join the scheme, in which local people help better integrate their transport hub into the community.

The 7-11 year olds recently created 14 displays which are positioned in the arches along the side of each platform. Southwark Council funded the frames through a grant of £5,000 from its "Cleaner Greener Safer" fund. The art is designed by the students around a number of topics, including the works of particular artists, and was initially displayed as part of the school's art exhibit. It will remain on display all year.

Headteacher Claire Purcell said: "We are so proud of the children's achievement and having the opportunity to showcase this excellent art for anyone travelling through the station or arriving from further afield. The children's art is only shown for a short time at our school exhibit and we thank Southern for this chance to showcase it for a lot longer, particularly to family members who can't always make it to the main event.”

Southern station manager Stephen Lethorn added: "I'm so pleased with the artwork and thank the kids for their hard work. There is a lot of wonderful talent on show and I really appreciate the efforts everyone has put in. It makes such a difference to our passengers and adds lovely colour across the platforms. We have already seen a reduction in graffiti at the station which is another really positive outcome."

Cllr Jane Lyons said: “It’s great to see the funds from Southwark’s Cleaner Greener Safer fund put to such creative and long lasting use. The art is fantastic and will cheer all passengers using the station, especially as many of us have family connections with the Hamlet School already.

“Dulwich Hamlet Junior School is going from strength to strength and we are very proud to have them in our ward. And of course Dulwich is already famous for its art – we are home to Dulwich Picture Gallery and many visitors to the gallery pass through North Dulwich station so it’s a great welcome to the area.”

Govia Thameslink Railway

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) operates Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern and Gatwick Express services as follows:

Thameslink – services between Bedford and Brighton, Luton/St Albans and Sutton, Wimbledon and Sevenoaks

Great Northern – services between London and Welwyn, Hertford, Peterborough, Cambridge and King’s Lynn

Southern – services between London and the Sussex coast (Brighton, Worthing, Eastbourne, Bognor Regis, Hastings) and parts of Surrey, Kent and Hampshire (Ashford International, Southampton, Portsmouth)

Gatwick Express – fast, non-stop direct services between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria

GTR is the largest rail franchise in the UK in terms of passenger numbers, trains, revenue and staff: GTR carries about 326 million passenger journeys per year, and employs around 6,500 people. Its aim is to improve services across all four networks.

Ticket revenue is passed to the government which pays GTR a fee to operate the franchise which is adjusted according to how well the train service is performing.

Southern has the highest passenger growth in the UK with numbers into London having doubled in 12 years - compared with the industry doubling over the past 20 years. To meet this growth and to future-proof the network, GTR is modernising the rail service for passengers.

GTR has introduced more new trains in the past year than all other franchises put together, with 500 new carriages so far.

The transformative £7bn Thameslink Programme will bring hundreds more daily services from 2018, increasing the number of trains though the central London core from up to 15 to 24 trains per hour. Network Rail has also launched a £300m programme to improve resilience across the GTR network

GTR is modernising how it works, with new technology in use at our stations and on our trains, smartcard ticketing and a new, flexible on-board role on many Southern services. This ensures fewer cancellations, and with more staff on board our trains now than ever before, passengers are enjoying a much better level of on-board customer service.

The GTR investment programme for stations includes funding for more CCTV, toilet refurbishments, new retail facilities, help points and car park improvements – as well as plans for increased motorcycle storage and improved transport integration.
