Public meeting announced into Cambridge road bridge closure

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), Network Rail and its contractors will host a public meeting at the Double Tree Hilton at 6pm on 1 November to discuss a proposed eight-week closure of Mill Road bridge in Cambridge in May 2019.

A £30 million expansion of the railway depot requires modification of one of the bridge's arches to allow an additional rail track to run beneath the bridge.

The upgrade, part of the government-sponsored £7 billion Thameslink Programme, will help increase the number of Thameslink services.

A spokesperson for GTR said: “This expansion of the depot is an essential part of rail modernisation plans that will double the number of newly-created Cambridge to Brighton services, giving Cambridge residents direct access to central London stations and Gatwick Airport, boosting the local economy.”

Andy MacGregor, senior sponsor for Network Rail said: “As part of our normal community engagement process when applying for road closures, we are jointly hosting this public meeting with GTR and their construction company, Spencer’s. We will use the opportunity to listen to people’s concerns and provide more details about what will happen and how we will keep them informed.”

In the meantime, the integrated team will be briefing area councillors and meeting with representatives from the local community and the traders’ community.
