Anna Richardson calls on residents in Eastbourne to take a Step Out for Stroke
TV presenter and writer Anna Richardson is calling on stroke survivors, their friends and family in Eastbourne to join the Stroke Association to take a Step Out for Stroke. The charity is hosting one of its walks at Hampden Park at 11am on Sunday 24 June and everyone is welcome.
Stroke is a leading cause of disability and there are over 1.2 million people in the UK living with the after effects. For stroke survivors, the challenge of taking part in Step out for Stroke will also celebrate their steps towards regaining their independence.
Anna Richardson said: “I know first-hand the devastating impact that stroke can have. That’s why I’m inviting you to join thousands of the charity’s amazing supporters across the UK to take part in Step Out for Stroke 2018. The great thing about these walks is that you can walk at your own pace and in your own time. So, whether you walk just a few steps or the full mile, you’re doing something truly wonderful to help stroke survivors overcome the challenges of living with stroke and regaining their independence.
“My father, Jim, 76, had a stroke in 2014 when he was at home on his computer. He suddenly felt confused and couldn’t make sense of the letters on the screen or keyboard. He tried calling 999, but was unable to speak properly. Luckily, he was able to stumble to a friend’s house who recognised that he was having a stroke and was able to make the call.
“My first reaction was shock and panic. He’s recovered most of his physical and mental ability now and we treat each day as a win. His speech came back pretty quickly, but he’s been left with weakness down his left side.”
Chloe Braidford, Community and Events Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “A stroke can happen to anyone, at any age, at any time and it changes lives in an instant. For many stroke survivors, Step out for Stroke will mark an important milestone in their road to recovery and seeing them take on this challenge will be truly inspirational.
“Step out for Stroke is also a fun day out for all the family and we hope to see as many people as possible from the local community taking part alongside stroke survivors and enjoying the other activities on offer.”
Step out for Stroke walks will take place across the England from May to July 2018 Visit www.stroke.org.uk/stepout to sign-up to an event near you.
