Corby stroke support group appeals for local volunteers

A Corby support group is appealing for volunteers, to enable them to continue to support stroke survivors on their road to recovery.

Corby Stroke Group launched in October 2014 and meets on the second Friday of the month at Danesholme Community Centre in Corby, from 10:30am – 12:30pm. The group was created in partnership with the Stroke Association and is now run by volunteers, to help people in the area come to terms with a life after stroke.

The group provides information about stroke and details of local services, support for stroke survivors, their friends and family and the opportunity to chat to others affected by stroke. Each session has a different focus with speakers from local organisations, creative therapy and exercise sessions on the programme.

The 12 members are now calling out to local residents to come and get involved, with positions available as the group’s chair, treasurer and secretary.

Vernon Hudson, 70 from Corby, had a stroke 12 years ago and was a member of the group before choosing to volunteer. He said: “The group gets me out of the house and gives me something to focus on. I enjoy talking to other people who have also had strokes and showing them there is life after stroke. We’re a friendly group and would very much welcome newcomers!”

Laura Merrett from the Stroke Association said: “As a recently formed group, the volunteers will be able to help shape the way it develops, which is exciting. Whether it’s simply social support, visits from speakers, exercise sessions or art therapy, the group is a great opportunity for stroke survivors and carers to meet other people who have been affected by stroke.

“It’s hugely important that stroke survivors feel supported in their local community as they are on the road to recovery. We’d love to hear from people who may like to get involved with helping to run the group and make a huge difference to stroke survivors in the local area.”
