Fun Day and Dog Show in support of The Stroke Association

Llansanfraid dog trainer, Nikki Cantrill, has organised a dog show in memory of her father who died following a stroke in July.

The event will be held on 2 September on the grounds of the dog training business Tony Cantrill helped his daughter establish.

Nikki, who also lost her grandmother to stroke 18 years ago, promises the dog show will be a fun and entertaining way to raise awareness of stroke prevention and help raise funds for the Stroke Association, which supports stroke survivors and their families.

Nikki said:

‘We’ll have the novelty classes, like saddest eyes, waggiest tale and the fastest sausage eater, as well as games and bobbing apples for the children.

‘We want to celebrate his life. Dad did so much to help everyone and my business is what it is today because of his support.

‘He’d always be in the fields playing with the dogs at our shows, so this is a lovely way to remember him.’

Around 7,400 people have a stroke every year in Wales and over 66,000 are living with the after effects.

Nikki added:

‘He’d had some mini strokes beforehand, which we hadn’t been aware of. He was in hospital with a viral infection when he had the stroke. They did give him medication which helped with his movement, but his speech and sight were badly affected and then he had pneumonia.’

‘A stroke can happen to anyone at any time and it turns lives upside down. With the support of fundraisers like Nikki, we can help more stroke survivors and their families as they rebuild their lives.

‘Funds raised also go towards raising awareness of the signs of stroke, supporting stroke survivors and funding ways in which it can be prevented.’

The Powys K9 Family Fun and Dog Show will take place from 12pm on Sunday, 2 September 2018 at Llansanfraid, SY22 6SY.
