Miss Lincolnshire calls on the region to Make May Purple for stroke

Miss Lincolnshire, Siana Hemmings, has joined forces with the Stroke Association, to Make May Purple for Action on Stroke Month 2015.

Siana was painted purple from head to toe in a striking new photo shoot, to show her support for the charity’s latest campaign and raise awareness of stroke. The concept was the brainchild of professional make-up artist Tina Brocklebank, 45 from Healing, after her Nanna had a stroke.

Tina, says: “My Nanna had a stroke when I was about 13 years old and I remember how dramatically it affected her. I used to read to her while she repeated the words, which she found extremely difficult. She also lost the use of one of her arms and eventually her legs, before having to use a wheelchair. My Nanna was such a strong lady and exceptionally hard-working. My mum cared for her until she passed away some years later; it was a very difficult time.

“As a professional make-up artist with more than 25 years’ experience, I wanted to organise the photo shoot to raise awareness for the Stroke Association. The charity supports stroke survivors to make their best possible recovery as they come to terms with a life after stroke.”

Siana added: “There are around 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK today living with the impact of stroke, so it’s very important to raise awareness of this devastating condition. I would love for people in Lincolnshire to join me in going purple this Action on Stroke Month.”

The photography was taken by Scunthorpe based fashion and portrait photographer Aaron Cheeseman at Healing Manor, Grimsby, with hair styling provided by Rachel Louise Courtney from Cherry Blossom Hair Boutique in Cleethorpes.

Julia MacLeod, Regional Head of Operations at the Stroke Association, said: “This year, we’re calling on communities to come together and help us to Make May Purple. From baking purple cupcakes to organising a purple office day and everything in between, we’re hoping everyone will join in and go purple for stroke.

“There are around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes. It is vital that we have people to help raise funds and awareness. We’re really grateful to Siana, Tina and the team behind the photo shoot for all their support; together we can conquer stroke.”
