Stafford woman tackles 10k for the Stroke Association in memory of mum

Lisa Goodwin from Stafford will take on the Stafford 10k on Sunday 25 September, to mark 11 years to the day that she lost her mother to a stroke.

Lisa, 48, was inspired to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association after her mother Alva King passed away after a stroke on 25 September 2005, aged 66.

Lisa said: “My mum’s death was completely out of the blue. It was such a shock to us all and left the family devastated. She was only 66. When I saw the race fell on this date, I knew I wanted to take part for my mum.”

Lisa’s 10km route will go past Stafford Leisure Centre, before making its way towards Beaconside, then taking in sections of the Isabel Trail. The race will then enter Victoria Park before returning to the finish line in Market Square.

Lisa added: “It’s a huge challenge as I’ve never run anything like this before, but I’m enjoying getting out and plodding the streets during training. I just want to finish the race and make my family proud of me. I’ve chosen to raise funds for the Stroke Association as it’s a cause close to my heart, and I want others affected by stroke to get the support they need.”

Katrin Winstanley, Events Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes - it is vital that we have people who can raise funds for people affected by stroke. We’re incredibly grateful to Lisa for taking on this challenge. The money will go a long way in helping to support people who are living with the effects of stroke, as well as their families and carers.”
