Worsley author’s book launch will raise money for the Stroke Association

Author Tom Bridge, 57 from Boothstown, is using the launch of his first fiction book to raise funds for the Stroke Association after the charity supported his recovery from a stroke.

Tom, a father of two, had a stroke in 2015 at the age of 55 and wrote his latest book’ The Mystery of Gogarth Abbey’ to help him cope with the experience. The book tells the story of a group of girls investigating the mystery of the abbey while on a school trip.

Tom will be signing copies at The Urmston Book Shop’s ‘An Evening with the Author’ event on Tuesday 20 March. Proceeds from all his books sold on the evening will be donated to the charity.

Tom said: “Having a stroke made me lose the feeling on my left side and I’ve had to work really hard with my physiotherapist to regain a lot of my movement and to build up my strength. But, I’ve still got some weakness in my left side, particularly my mouth. It’s also affected me emotionally and knocked my confidence.

“Throughout my recovery, I had the support of the Stroke Association and I’m so glad they were there for me. They understood what I was going through and helped me so much. That’s why I’ve chosen to raise funds for the charity through my writing so they can help others affected by stroke to get the support they need.”

“Writing this book gave me something positive to focus on. It took around a year to write and I’m so proud of it. The book is doing really well so far, but I’d also love to see local people come along to the book signing event and show their support for the work of the Stroke Association.”

Sian Thomas, Community and Events Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Tom for choosing to support the Stroke Association. Every five minutes someone in the UK has a stroke. The money raised by Tom will go towards helping more stroke survivors and their families to rebuild their lives.

The event will take place at The Urmston Book Store on Tuesday 20 March from 7pm. Tickets are £3 which is redeemable against the price of the book and includes refreshments.
