Recycling wine boxes gets easy: Altia introduces rip tape in its packages

Last year Finnish and Swedish monopolies sold over 124 liters of wine in bag-in-box, and the sales are growing in Altia’s market areas. Altia's wine brand Chill Out is the first brand to launch a smart rip tape function on the bag-in-box. The rip tape makes it easy to open the cardboard to take out the plastic bag and recycle all parts of the box.

"Wine in bag-in-box is of course more environment friendly than glass bottles but we know that many have had problems with recycling the packages since the cardboard boxes have been difficult to open. Our new package makes it very easy to sort the parts correctly", says Carin Widoff, Brand Manager Wine at Altia Sweden.

Chill Out is Altia's proprietary wine brand. It is one of Sweden’s bestselling wine brands with sales of 4.3 million liters only on bag-in-box in 2013. Chill Out is also sold in Finland, Denmark, Norway, Estonia and Latvia.

"Since bag-in-box wines are such a big part of the sales, we consider it important to take our responsibility and offer smart packages", Carin Widoff continues.

Chill Out Smooth & Soft will be the first wine box launched with this new rip tape function. sold at the Swedish market. The other three Chill Out boxes available in Finland will get rip tapes as well. Rip tapes will also be included in some local favorites, such as St. Elmo wines in Finland.

Wine boxes are environmentally friendly because they cause less impact on the environment in the production phase and in transport. With the rip tape, it is now easy for consumers to recycle the cardboard and plastic bag.
