Wine in a light PET bottle makes a relaxed summer

In 2010, Altia launched the first PET bottle for its Chill Out wine series. During 2013, over half a million litres of Chill Out wine was sold in PET bottles. For many people, summer boating trips, camping holidays and picnics are unthinkable without the handy, slim bottles. The clever packaging concept is easy to carry, takes up little space and does not break. It is also easy to recycle.

PET bottles are increasingly becoming a fixture on alcohol monopoly shelves. In addition to popular bag-in-boxes, the Nordic consumers have quickly become consumers of wines in PET bottles.

A PET bottle weighs only one-tenth as much as a glass bottle

Wine in PET bottles is not only environmentally friendly and easy to recycle –  the packaging is practical as well, because it is easy to carry and easy to handle. A PET bottle weighs only one-tenth as much as a regular glass bottle, which is a great advantage for anyone wanting to carry the bottles to their summer cabins and campsites.

The bottles take up less space than traditional glass bottles so they can fit neatly, for instance, on the bottom of a row boat, in a camping fridge or in a picnic basket. In addition, there is no risk of glass breakage. Thanks to the thinness of the plastic, you can quickly chill a PET bottle of white wine for a summer lunch or an aperitif on the waterfront.

“Now even more Chill Out wines are available in PET bottles, which makes it easy to choose a wine to match any type of summer food, such as burgers fresh from the barbeque, or a light summer salad with goat’s cheese or grilled salmon,” says Carin Widoff, Brand Manager at Altia Sweden.

PET bottle is a natural step in the evolution in wine history

Throughout history, wine has been stored in bags made of animal skin, in terracotta amphorae, in wooden barrels, and, of course, in glass bottles of various colours and shapes. Offering wine in PET bottles is a natural step in the evolution.

“We are constantly in search of packaging that makes life easier for our consumers, and we have noticed that the PET bottle is here to stay. In addition to being easy to pack and carry, it is easy to recycle – all you have to do is drop in to your nearest grocery shop,” says Carin Widoff.
