AOECS opens up the General Assembly Conference for the public

For 35 years the AOECS General Assembly has been an internal affair. Now this will change. For the first time, AOECS invites the public to join the first day of its Annual Conference held in Athens, Greece on Friday, November 3rd, 2023.

The event offers a unique opportunity to meet different national coeliac associations, understand gluten-free food availability and market development within and beyond Europe, and find out more about the latest research and innovation efforts, including policy-making and advocacy.

The conference is organized by the Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) which is the owner of the AOECS Gluten-Free Standard and the Gluten Free Alliance to promote the use of the Crossed Grain Symbol on gluten-free pre-packaged food products in Europe. The Crossed Grain Trademark is used on more than 23,000 verified gluten-free products by thousands of companies in Europe.

The cost of attending the Open Conference Day will be 50 euros excluding VAT and the number of available seats is limited. Visitors will enjoy a half-day filled with presentations, panel discussions and news about current research on coeliac disease. They will also have the opportunity to visit the Gluten Free Alliance Market Place to mingle, meet and make connections with influential representatives from the worldwide coeliac community.

“We expect over 100 delegates from +40 countries worldwide representing national coeliac societies. But also, we are thrilled to welcome also food brands, researchers and journalists. This makes the event probably the largest coeliac society gathering in the world and the perfect opportunity to connect and liaise with the coeliac community”, says Veronica Rubio, Secretary General of AOECS.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease, caused by the ingestion of food containing gluten, which is a type of protein that can be found in the cereals wheat, barley and rye. Coeliac disease may affect about 1,3 % of the world population, but many of them are unaware of having this condition. If it remains undiagnosed, this can result in symptoms ranging from minor discomfort to life-threatening conditions like severe anaemia. Today, the only known effective treatment is a strict life-long gluten-free diet.
