Cover from Test Flight by World Famous Pilot Charles Lindbergh up for Auction

In 1927, the pilot Charles Lindbergh became world famous for being the first to fly a direct solo flight across the Atlantic. Now you can bid on a rare cover, which Lindbergh had with him from Iceland during a test flight between the US and Europe in 1933. It will be up for auction at Bruun Rasmussen on 30 November.

The American pilot Charles Lindbergh became world famous, after he was the first to cross the Atlantic in a direct solo flight in 1927. Because of this achievement, he was hired by the large American airline companies led by Pan Am (Pan American World Airways), when they established a transatlantic plane route over the arctic regions and needed a pilot for their test flights.

One of Lindbergh’s assignments was to find a safe passage for passenger planes between the US and Europa – and he succeeded! In 1933, he flew on behalf of Pan Am from New York to Greenland, from Greenland to Iceland and from Iceland to the Faroese islands, before he made it to the European continent.

From the stopover on Iceland, the plane had a limited number of covers, and it is one of these covers, one can now bid on, when the Auction House Bruun Rasmussen presents it at auction.

Only about five covers are known to exist from this flight, so the cover, which we are selling at auction is extremely rare,” says Christian Grundtvig, Head of the Department for Stamps at Bruun Rasmussen. ”Among other things, the offered cover has been given a special stamp that signifies this shipment. It was sent via Iceland and Copenhagen to Sorø.”

The offered cover from the test flight of legendary pilot Charles Lindbergh is estimated at a value of DKK 15,000.

The cover is up for auction at Bruun Rasmussen on 30 November, an auction which will take place online. View the auction and all of the lots with stamps from Danish and international collections HERE.
