Lost Finn Juhl Masterpiece Resurfaces – One of Only Two Known Chieftain Sofas Heads to Auction

An original 1949 “Chieftain Sofa” by Danish designer Finn Juhl has resurfaced, returning to the market as one of the most elusive objects in Scandinavian design history. The sofa is estimated at DKK 1.2-1.5 million (€160,585-200,700) and will be offered at auction at Bruun Rasmussen in Denmark on 18 June.

Believed to be one of only two examples in existence – and possibly the only one outside museum collections – the sofa reopens a long-standing question within Danish design history: what happened to the other original model?

While the companion Chieftain Chair entered both production and private interiors over the decades, the Chieftain Sofa remained almost entirely absent from the market – acquiring an almost mythological status among collectors and historians.

Today, one example is held in the permanent collection of Designmuseum Denmark in Copenhagen, while the other has remained out of public view – until now.

Like finding the Holy Grail

There was considerable excitement at Bruun Rasmussen when the piece emerged during a private home valuation, adding a significant new chapter to the story of one of Finn Juhl’s most defining works – a piece many believed lost for decades.

“We are incredibly proud to present this sofa, which represents one of the most important chapters in Danish furniture history. As a design specialist, it feels like finding the Holy Grail – a fragment of cultural heritage that many assumed was lost,” says Poul Svalgaard, specialist in modern design at Bruun Rasmussen.

Stamped by master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder and preserved in its original natural leather, the sofa has remained within the same family since 1952, when it was acquired from The Permanent Exhibition of Danish Arts and Crafts and Industrial Design in Copenhagen.

The original exhibition piece

The Chieftain Sofa was first presented at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1949 by Finn Juhl in collaboration with his long-time partner Niels Vodder. That year marked, in many ways, the definitive international breakthrough of Danish furniture design, and this particular stand showcased the height of Juhl’s creative achievement.

At the exhibition, Finn Juhl and Niels Vodder presented a series of now-canonical works, including the Chieftain Sofa, the Chieftain Chair, and the Egyptian Chair. While the latter two were put into production, the sofa was made only in extremely limited numbers – likely no more than two examples.

To date, only two examples of this unique sofa, crafted by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, are known to exist. One is currently held in the collection of Designmuseum Denmark; the other is the present sofa, offered at this upcoming auction.

Research suggests that the example held by Designmuseum Denmark differs from the original exhibition piece, featuring six buttons in the backrest. The sofa now coming to auction, by contrast, has seven – matching the documented exhibition model.

“The newly discovered example corresponds to the 1949 exhibition model through its seven characteristic buttons. It differs from the only other known example, now held at Designmuseum Denmark, which has six. It is therefore highly likely that this sofa is indeed the original exhibition piece from 1949,” says Poul Svalgaard.

The discovery marks the rediscovery of a masterpiece from the golden age of Danish design and stands as one of the most remarkable finds in recent design history.

About Finn Juhl (1912–1989)

Finn Juhl was educated as an architect, but furniture and interior design became his life’s work. In close collaboration with Niels Vodder, he developed groundbreaking techniques that resulted in some of the most distinctive pieces in design history. Inspired by the abstract and organic language of modern art, Juhl’s work stood in marked contrast to the otherwise restrained Danish modernism of his time.

A central figure in the development of Danish modernism around 1950, he was also among the first Danish designers to achieve international recognition. His work has had a lasting influence on modern furniture design worldwide. The interior for the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (1950) remains his most significant architectural work, and today his designs are represented in leading museums around the globe.
