First long-range, electric speedboat enters the Norwegian market

After becoming the best-selling electric boat brand in Europe, e-boat pioneer Candela brings its revolutionary speedboat to the Norwegian market.

Norway leads the charge on electric vehicles. But while electric cars made up more than 50 percent of new car sales in 2020, sales of electric boats were still slow.

This might change in 2021 as Candela Seven, the world’s first long-range and high-speed electric boat, enters the Norwegian market in May.

Thanks to its underwater wings, the Swedish-made Candela Seven flies above the water, using very little energy. The almost non-existent friction means Candela Seven is the first electric boat to attain a good range at high speeds. Cruising at 20 knots, the Seven can fly for 2,5 hours, or 50 nautical miles, on one charge of its 40 kWh battery. Top speed is 30 knots which can be sustained for more than an hour.

The Stockholm-based tech company Candela has developed its proprietary hydrofoil technology since 2014. The first production model equipped with its energy-saving technology is the 7,7 m Candela Seven, a pleasure craft for watersports, outings and fun in the sun.

Slung under the light-weight carbon fiber hull are two hydrofoils, underwater wings, that provide so much lift at 17 knots that the whole boat rises out of the water. Once the boat is foil-borne, the underwater wings are automatically and constantly adjusted by computers to maintain the best height, roll and pitch. The result is an ultra-stable boat, unaffected by smaller waves and wind gusts.

–The ride is much smoother than in a conventional boat since the Seven flies above the chop and wake. It’s silent too, not only because of the electric motor, but also because there’s no slamming, says Candela’s Communications Manager Mikael Mahlberg.

– The software takes care of the tiring part of driving, such as the constant stress about having to trim the boat, and leaves all the fun stuff to you, says Mikael Mahlberg.

After serial production started in 2019, the Seven became the best-selling electric boat model on the European market in 2020. Candela will deliver the first boat to Norway in early May, and set up the first service center in Oslo.

– We believe the Norwegian market will be a key focus for us in the future, says Mikael Mahlberg.

About Candela

Candela was founded in 2014 by engineer and entrepreneur Gustav Hasselskog. The aim of the company is to build the first long-range and high-speed electric boats that not only can compete with fossil fuel craft, but beat them in terms of performance. After five years of R&D, serial production of the first electric, hydrofoiling model, Candela Seven, started at the company's factory in Lidingö, Stockholm.

At the heart of Candela's technology is the active foil system that has been developed in-house.

Candela employs 40 engineers and technicians at the factory in Lidingö, Stockholm, where all boats are built and assembled.

In short:

  • Candela Seven is the world’s first electric hydrofoil boat, and the world’s first long-range and high-speed electric boat. First e-boat that rivals fossil fuel competitors in terms of perfromance. All other conventional electric boats have either short range and high speed, or long range and low speed - not both.
  • Energy consumption reduced by 80 percent compared to a conventional boat hull, thus enabling better range on battery power.
  • Many more advantages over conventional boats:
  • Totally silent
  • 95 percent cheaper to run than gasoline power competitors
  • No slamming from medium size waves
  • No wake behind boat that causes erosion and disturbs wildlife and other boaters
  • Zero emissions
