Longest-range electric boat debuts at Boot Düsseldorf fair
Swedish electric hydrofoil watercraft maker Candela shows two production versions of the revolutionary Candela C-8 at Boot Dusseldorf 2023, January 21-29.
Exhaust fumes, noise, and emissions are the past, electric hydrofoiling is the future. The fully electric Candela C-8 has 2 to 3 times the range of conventional electric boats in planing speed, using hydrofoils to lift the boat out of the water, greatly reducing energy consumption. Two production models will be shown at Boot Düsseldorf: the day cruiser and the hard top.
Earlier this week, Candela revealed the first product from the collaboration with premium car brand Polestar, the Candela C-8 ‘powered by Polestar’. It will use the same 69 kWh battery pack and DC charging technology as the Polestar 2, giving an expected range of 57 nautical miles at 22 knots, longer than any other production electric boat, and the ability to fast charge the battery in less than an hour.
“We are using the best available technology to greatly cut consumption and extend the range, giving access to destinations previously only reached by combustion engine boats”, says Gustav Hasselskog, CEO, and founder of boat maker Candela.
Using hydrofoils to fly above the surface greatly reduces water friction, allowing the C-8 to use 80% less energy than conventional boats at high speed. Its highly efficient pod motor, Candela C-POD, outputs 70 kW/93hp for takeoff. Once foilborne, the C-8 flies efficiently, drawing only around 23 kW/30hp continuously from its Polestar battery pack – whereas a similar-sized conventional boat would use 120 kW/160hp.
Candela C-8 has been nominated for the prestigious European Powerboat Award in the “Electric” category. The winner will be revealed during Boot Düsseldorf.
The Candela C-8 day cruiser and the hard top will be on display in Booth 22 in hall 4 during Boot Düsseldorf January 21-29.
