세계 최초 수중익선 전기 페리, 뉴질랜드의 가장 아름다운 호수에서 운항 예정
뉴질랜드 재생 에너지 기업 메리디안 에너지(Meridian Energy)가 스웨덴 기업 칸델라(Candela)와 계약을 체결해 뉴질랜드 최대 수력 발전소를 운영하는 해당 기업 및 협력사 직원을 대상으로 마나포우리 호수에서 세계 최초 전기 수중익선 페리 칸델라 P-12를 운항한다.
마나포우리 호수에서 혁신적인 수중익선인 칸델라 P-12를 운항하면 매년 탄소 배출량 240톤을 줄일 수 있으며, 이는 휘발유 차량 52대가 도로 운행을 중단하는 것과 같은 효과다.
마나포우리 호수는 뉴질랜드에서 가장 아름다운 호수로 손꼽힌다. 세계적으로 유명한 피오르드랜드 국립공원에 위치한 호수로, 유네스코 세계유산으로 지정되었고 세계에서 가장 청정한 수역에 속한다. 이곳에 있는 메리디안의 마나포우리 수력 발전소는 뉴질랜드 평균 60만 가구 이상이 사용할 수 있는 전력을 생산하며 뉴질랜드 수력 저장 시스템의 핵심적인 역할을 담당하고 있다.
해당 수력 발전소는 풍력 발전 단지 6개와 수력 발전소 6개로 구성된 메리디안의 100% 재생에너지 발전 포트폴리오의 일부다. 메리디안은 뉴질랜드 전력의 30%를 생산하며 현재 발전량을 2배로 늘릴 수 있는 신재생 에너지 개발 파이프라인을 보유하고 있다.
메리디안 에너지의 타니아 팔머(Tania Palmer) 발전 부문 총괄 본부장은 칸델라 전기 페리를 통해 메리디안의 내부 수송 탄소 배출을 줄이고 2030년까지 배출량 절반 감축이라는 기업 목표에 기여할 수 있다고 밝혔다.
타니아 팔머 본부장에 따르면 "탄소 배출을 줄이려면 대담하고 혁신적인 자세를 가져야 하며, 이번 계약은 메리디안 에너지에 필요한 세계 최고의 최신 기술을 물색한 결과"다.
이어서 "칸델라 P-12는 현재 당사 및 협력사 직원들이 호수를 건너 발전소로 이동하는 데 사용하는 디젤 페리를 대체하는 흥미로운 수단이다. 전기 페리는 탄소 배출량을 대폭 줄이는 동시에 직원들에게 분명 최고의 통근 환경을 제공할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
메리디안은 스웨덴에서 설계한 칸델라 P-12를 인도받는 유럽 외 지역의 첫 번째 고객이 된다.
칸델라의 구스타프 하셀스코그(Gustav Hasselskog) CEO는 "지속 가능한 에너지로의 전환과 글로벌 탈탄소화를 선도하는 글로벌 리더와 파트너십을 맺게 되어 매우 기쁘며 곧 마나포우리 호수에서 운항할 P-12의 모습이 기대된다"고 밝혔다.
또한 "더 깨끗하고 친환경적인 미래를 위해 앞장서 주시는 메리디안에 감사의 말씀을 전한다"고 덧붙였다.
P-12는 컴퓨터 제어 수중익선 방식으로 선체를 띄워 높은 속도로 날듯이 활주하므로 기존 선박에 비해 마찰과 항력이 약 80% 적게 발생하며 배터리 전원만으로 장거리 및 고속 이동이 가능하다. 25노트 순항속도에서 항적은 15cm(약 6인치) 미만으로 유네스코 세계유산으로 지정된 마나포우리 호수의 호안선 침식을 최소화하고 뉴질랜드 장어를 비롯한 토착 어종의 서식지를 보호할 수 있다.
칸델라 P-12는 2025년에 마나포우리 호수에서 운항을 시작할 예정이다.

스웨덴 스톡홀름에 본사를 둔 칸델라 테크놀로지(Candela Technology AB)는 수중익선 전기 선박 분야를 선도하는 세계적인 기업이다. 2014년 엔지니어였던 구스타프 하셀스코그 CEO는 화석 연료로 구동하는 선박의 성능을 뛰어넘는 전기 선박을 개발하여 화석 연료가 없는 호수와 바다로의 전환을 본격화하겠다는 사명으로 칸델라를 설립했다.
칸델라 선박에는 선체 아래에 수중익이라는 날개가 장착되어 있으며 이를 통해 선체를 물 위로 띄우고 마찰을 낮춰 기존 선박 대비 에너지 사용량을 80% 절감한다. 이 기술 덕분에 업계 최초로 배터리 단일 전원으로 장거리 해상 운송을 실현했다. 또한 칸델라의 수중익을 통해 운영 비용을 최대 50%까지 절감하여 지속 가능한 선박으로의 수익성 있는 전환이 가능하다.
칸델라 수중익 기술 스택의 핵심은 플라이트 제어 장치로, 파고와 풍속을 측정하는 센서를 사용하여 수중익을 제어해 활주 중 선박을 자동으로 안정화한다. 승객은 악천후 속에서도 기존 선박에 비해 중력 저항을 90% 적게 느끼게 된다. 칸델라의 모든 선박은 무선 연결이 가능하며 원격 업데이트를 수신할 수 있어 시간이 지날수록 성능이 더 향상된다.
칸델라는 2019년 첫 번째 연속 생산 선박인 개방형 스포츠 보트 C-7을 출시했고 이는 2021년까지 생산됐다. 총생산량은 32대였다. 2022년, 더 크고 대량 생산이 가능한 후속 모델 칸델라 C-8을 출시했고, C-8의 판매량은 150대 이상으로 유럽에서 가장 많이 팔린 전기 보트로 자리매김했다.
2024년 칸델라는 최초 상업용 선박인 칸델라 P-12 셔틀 유형을 인도한다. 이는 최고 속도 30노트, 최대 항속 거리 60해리로 업계 최고의 속도 및 에너지 효율을 자랑하는 전기 선박이 될 것이다. 디젤 선박 대비 상당한 운영비용 절감 효과가 기대된다. 첫 제품은 2023년 11월에 진수했다.

Stockholm-based Candela Technology AB is the world leader in hydrofoiling electric vessels. The company was founded in 2014 by engineer and business leader Gustav Hasselskog with the mission to accelerate the world's transition to fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans by developing electric vessels that outperform those powered by fossil fuels.
Candela's watercraft have wings (hydrofoils) that lift the hull above the water and reduce friction, using 80% less energy than conventional ships at high speed. This technology allows for long-range water travel solely on battery power, a first in the industry. Candela's hydrofoils also enable operators to transition to sustainable fleets by providing up to 50% lower operational costs.
At the heart of Candela's hydrofoil tech stack is the Flight controller, which automatically stabilizes the vessel during flight by regulating the foils, using sensors that gauge wave height and wind speed, among other factors. Even in rough weather, passengers experience 90% less g-forces than they would on a traditional boat. All Candela vessels are fully connected and receive over-the-air updates.
After five years of research and development, Candela began producing the world's first electric hydrofoil leisure boat in 2019, the Candela C-7 open "roadster of the seas". This was followed in 2021 by the high-volume market Candela C-8, which will be delivered to the first customers in spring 2023. Over 150 C-8 units have been sold to date, and the vessel has been lauded as a "game changer" by Motorboat and Yachting magazine, winning numerous awards including the 2022 European Powerboat of the Year award for its superior seakeeping, long range, and high speed.
In 2023, Candela is launching its first commercial vessel, the Candela P-12 Shuttle ferry. It is poised to set multiple world records for being the fastest and longest-range electric ship ever built, with a top speed of 30 knots and a range of up to 60 nautical miles. It will also be the most energy-efficient fast ship ever made in its size class. Substantial operational cost savings are expected. The first unit is water launched during summer 2023.
Candela is a technology company with headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, employing over 200 engineers, technicians, and production staff.
