Inaugural Climate Leadership Award goes to Port of Los Angeles

The first award of its kind from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) acknowledges ‘businesses and organizations that have shown outstanding leadership in response to climate change’.

The Port of Los Angeles came out on top in the EPA’s Supply Chain Leadership category for its greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals, comprehensive tracking and inventories, as well as leadership and management in these areas.

The EPA praised The Port of Los Angeles, “America’s Port”, for its leadership in helping ports around the world measure and reduce their carbon footprints through initiatives such as the World Ports Climate Initiative, which has developed tools to measure GHG emissions, such as the Carbon Calculator.

Upon receiving the award, Port Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D said she was "proud that many of our programs now serve as models for other ports around the world."

Cavotec works closely with the Port of Los Angeles and has installed an Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) system at the port, which enables ships to turn off their diesel-driven engines while at berth as a way of reducing both air and noise pollution.
