    Press Invitation: Belkis Ayón / Mythologies

    Belkis Ayón (1967–1999) is one of Cuba’s most prominent artists. In the first Nordic presentation of the artist’s work, Bildmuseet presents creative highlights from her brief but intense career, from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. The exhibition opens on Art Friday, 23 March, and will be previewed to the media by arrangement from Monday, 19 May. Welcome!

    Bildmuseet unveils a new site-specific iteration of Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg’s sound and light installation Machine Auguries, this time set in Umeå in northern Sweden. Premiere on 12 January! Presented alongside the previous iterations from London and Toledo, these three artificial dawn choruses from different parts of the world invite us to reflect on our relationship with nature.

    Military ceremonies, postage imagery, maps, and heritage sites that shape national identity and imbue it with meaning are the subject of Aseel AlYaqoub’s solo exhibition The View from Above, opening at Bildmuseet on 18 October.

    Swedish Picture Book of the Year / Everybody Eats Everybody

    On 15 March, an exhibition opens with Aron Landahl’s original paintings for Alla äter alla [Everybody Eats Everybody], selected as the year’s best Swedish picture book. The opening will take place during Bildmuseet’s Art Friday with Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival.

    Bildmuseet nominated to Swedish Museum of the Year

    Every year, the prestigious award Swedish Museum of the Year is presented. This year the prize could go to Bildmuseet, which is one of three nominated finalists. The award is given to the museum that has demonstrated courage, creativity, and excellence. The purpose of the award is to highlight exemplary museum work and to inspire other museums to innovative activities of the highest quality.

    Mandana Moghaddam / Woman Life Freedom

    The autumn's first opening at Bildmuseet features a solo exhibition by the Swedish-Iranian artist Mandana Moghaddam. The exhibition showcases mirror mosaic, sculpture, and installation, and will be inaugurated with an artist talk on Saturday, 16th September, the anniversary of Mahsa Jina Amini's death in Tehran.     Bildmuseet: Swedish Picture Book of the Year / The Wound

    Emma AdBåges’s Såret [The Wound] has been awarded the Snöbollen [Snowball] prize for Swedish Picture Book of the Year. Bildmuseet’s exhibition of original illustrations from the winning book will open on Friday 26 May, and journalists are welcome to contact us for a preview and presentation.

    Mats Jonsson is one of Sweden's most prominent graphic novel artists. On June 17, Bildmuseet opens an exhibition based on his latest book När vi var samer [When We Were Sami], the first graphic novel to be nominated for the August Prize in the fiction category.     Iwo Myrin / Memories from the Taiga

    Iwo Myrin’s motifs are drawn from the taiga, the geographical zone of the northern hemisphere dominated by coniferous forest. In bronze casts and pinhole photographs of mushrooms, pine needles and moss, the taiga makes a direct impression in his exhibition at Bildmuseet.     Kom dagen, kom natten [Come Day, Come Night] by Åsa Lind and Emma Virke is named the best Swedish picture book in 2020 and honoured with the national award Snöbollen.     Premiere in Europe for Naeem Mohaiemen’s new film about loss and care

    ​Naeem Mohaiemen’s film Jole Dobe Na (Those Wo Do Not Drown) was commissioned by the Yokohama Triennale and Bildmuseet, where it is now being shown for the first time following its premiere in Japan. In the exhibition at Bildmuseet, the new film is presented together with earlier works by the artist.

    Opening at Bildmuseet: Art Across Species and Beings

    The upcoming exhibition at Bildmuseet brings together an outstanding selection of artworks which invite the visitor to rethink the human position in the world.     During its Art Friday with Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival – on 15 March, Bildmuseet Contemporary art museum will open the Swedish Picture Book of the Year exhibition. Author and artist Eva Lindström will participate in the opening ceremony.
