IVECO Paves the Way for Sustainable Mobility at Tour d'Europe: Over 5,000 Km Covered With Bio-LNG Truck
At the beginning of July, IVECO announced the successful completion of the Tour d'Europe, a milestone journey with a heavy-duty tractor unit fuelled by bio-LNG. This initiative once again underlines the crucial role of biomethane as a key factor in the transition to sustainable and low-emission road freight transport throughout Europe. The IVECO S-Way LNG started in Turin (Italy) and travelled north along a route that included strategically important refuelling stops combined with special events. These stops brought together gas suppliers, customers and dealers, promoting direct dialogue and cooperation within the biomethane value chain.
The first important refuelling station was Wipptal Biogas in Sterzing, a leading producer of high-quality biomethane. On its onward journey through Germany, the vehicle refuelled at the ENILIVE refuelling station in Eching, the Shell refuelling station in Mittenwalde near Berlin and later at the ViGo refuelling station in Leverkusen. The truck reached its destination in Brussels, where the closing event of the Tour d'Europe took place. Representatives of industry and members of the European Parliament attended the event to convey the urgency of technology neutrality as a fundamental principle for the successful decarbonisation of the transport sector. The event highlighted the importance of a coordinated, cross-sector partnership – from fuel suppliers to vehicle manufacturers – in demonstrating the concrete availability of effective solutions that can immediately contribute to the decarbonisation of the sector. Thanks to a strong network of partners and technological innovation, viable solutions for a carbon-neutral future in road freight transport are already available.
"Technology neutrality is essential to promote innovation and accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility. This means that no single technology is favoured, but that the best solutions can emerge based on real performance and environmental impact. For this approach to be successful, it must be supported by clear and consistent EU policy that creates a level playing field and provides incentives for investment in various low-emission technologies, including biodiesel and biomethane. The Tour d'Europe has clearly demonstrated the efficiency and sustainability of biofuels in heavy-duty transport. At IVECO, we believe that technological openness is the key to decarbonising road freight transport," said Simone Curti, Head of EMEA Commercial Operations, IVECO.
