Japanese Energy Company Secures Exclusive License for CYTOK Plants

CYTOK GmbH, based in Rostock, has signed an exclusive license agreement with GPSS Engineering Inc. (Japan), a subsidiary of the GPSS Group. This gives GPSS the sole right to use CYTOK's patented power-to-gas technology in Japan and Taiwan. The goal is to enter the Japanese market and jointly develop new markets in Asia.

CYTOK's systems convert excess electricity from wind or solar power into hydrogen. In a specially developed reactor, this hydrogen is combined with CO₂ to produce synthetic methane (SNG). A unique feature is its emission-free production in a closed gas cycle. The CO₂ produced during combustion is not released but is fully recycled and reused to produce methane. This creates a climate-neutral cycle with no emissions, particulate matter, or negative impacts on the greenhouse effect. Thanks to integrated heat recovery and intelligent energy management, the process achieves a particularly high overall utilization rate of up to 85% for the renewable energies used.

In Japan, fossil natural gas will be gradually replaced with synthetic methane starting in 2030, with the goal of achieving a 90% e-methane share in the existing grid by 2050. GPSS and CYTOK will test the practical application of the technology and jointly present it to the Japanese market in 2026. The agreement marks another milestone in the partnership, which began in May 2023 with the conclusion of a cooperation agreement.

"This license agreement is a strategically important step for CYTOK in the internationalization of our technology. Together with GPSS, we will offer an emission-free and resilient energy supply for regions with a growing need for renewable solutions in Japan and Taiwan," explains Klaus Schirmer, Managing Director of CYTOK GmbH.
