Letter of Intent Signed for a German-Australian Hydrogen Auction

In June, Germany and Australia signed a memorandum of understanding to further deepen hydrogen cooperation between the two countries. Stefan Rouenhoff, Parliamentary State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Energy, and Josh Wilson, Australia's Deputy Minister for Energy, spearheaded the signing. Australia is considered one of the most important potential export locations for green hydrogen. The cooperation strengthens the diversification of German energy imports and complements existing hydrogen partnerships with countries such as Canada, the Gulf States, and Namibia.

The plan is to purchase hydrogen products such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol via a joint auction platform in Australia and then resell them in Germany. Hint.Co GmbH will conduct both auctions. Both countries will provide up to €200 million to offset the cost difference between higher purchase prices and lower selling prices. This instrument is intended to close the market gap between production costs and buyers' willingness to pay. Initial hydrogen deliveries are expected from 2030 onwards. The memorandum of understanding provides for joint funding for up to ten years.

During the signing ceremony, Stefan Rouenhoff emphasized the trusting partnership and friendship between Australia and Germany. In a time of growing geopolitical challenges, the two countries are now forging even closer ties and intensifying their efforts to diversify their national energy policies and reduce energy dependencies.
