LNG Infrastructure Delivers: High Send-Out Strengthens Security of Supply
Germany’s LNG terminals made an important contribution to security of supply over the past winter. Current figures from Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH and Deutsche ReGas show a significant increase in send-out volumes, underlining the importance of this infrastructure for the German gas market.
In the first quarter of 2026, send-out via the LNG terminals operated by Deutsche Energy Terminal reached a new record level. At over 25 terawatt hours, the previous year’s figure was clearly exceeded. This was driven in particular by additional capacities and optimized operational processes at the sites.
Deutsche ReGas also reports high utilization of its terminal in Mukran during the winter months. The send-out figures highlight the role of privately financed infrastructure in building a resilient energy system and complement state-initiated capacities.
Infrastructure as the Backbone of Supply
Recent developments show that investments in LNG infrastructure are paying off. Especially in periods of high demand and volatile market conditions, LNG terminals make an important contribution to system flexibility and the stabilization of gas supply.
At the same time, LNG remains part of a broader and more diversified energy mix. Its share of total gas supply is still limited, but it is gaining importance, particularly in peak-load situations and for diversifying supply sources.
Planning Certainty Remains Key
The focus now must be on securing these structures for the long term. Reliable regulatory frameworks are essential to enable continued investment in infrastructure and to further advance the transformation of the energy system.
The current send-out figures make one thing clear: a high-performance import infrastructure will remain a central pillar of security of supply in the future, while also providing the foundation for the import of climate-neutral energy carriers such as hydrogen derivatives.
