MB Energy Granted Approval for Ammonia Import Terminal in Hamburg

MB Energy has received approval for the construction and operation of an ammonia import terminal in the Port of Hamburg. The responsible Hamburg environmental authority BUKEA gave the project the green light in April. The facility is to be built on the site of the existing Blumensand tank storage facility and will enable the import, storage and onward distribution of ammonia.

In addition to the tank storage facility and berths for inland and seagoing vessels, a cracker plant is planned in which the ammonia could be split into hydrogen and fed into the future hydrogen core network. The planned throughput capacity is approximately 600,000 tonnes of ammonia per year.

With the approval granted, a significant regulatory milestone has been reached for the project. However, a final investment decision has yet to be made, and construction will only begin once this has been concluded. The project forms part of MB Energy's strategic direction to provide infrastructure for low-carbon energy carriers and to support the broader energy transition.

Volker Ebeling, Senior Vice President New Energy, Supply & Infrastructure at MB Energy, emphasised that the planned ammonia terminal would significantly advance Hamburg's energy transition. He described it as a strong signal towards a future-proof and reliable supply of energy and basic materials.
