Migros Eastern Switzerland Expands Emission-Free Deliveries
Migros Ostschweiz is actively working on decarbonizing its transport fleet. Various drive technologies – from biodiesel and biogas to green hydrogen – are being used for this purpose. The next important step in this decarbonization strategy will be two new IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell hydrogen semi-trailers. They complement the two hydrogen trucks that Migros Ostschweiz has been operating since 2020. The vehicles are part of a pre-series from IVECO and will be extensively tested for branch deliveries over the next two years.
The two new Migros semi-trailers will be refueled at the Osterwalder Group's AVIA filling station in Gossau, in the immediate vicinity of Migros Ostschweiz operations headquarters. The hydrogen comes from the Kubel power plant in St. Gallen. Since 2022, the St. Gallen-Appenzell Power Plants (SAK), together with the Osterwalder Group and SN Renewable Energy AG, have been producing CO2-neutral hydrogen from hydropower for Swiss heavy-duty transport. It is one of only two such plants in Switzerland.
"The advantage of fuel cell vehicles is that they can be refueled quickly, have a long range, are very quiet, and, thanks to green hydrogen, are completely emission-free. That's exactly what we need for our daily work. Fuel 'from the region, for the region' – that's sustainability in action," says Daniel Balmer, Head of Transport Logistics at Migros Ostschweiz.
"With the IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell, we are testing a key technology for the emission-free heavy-duty transport of tomorrow in Switzerland. Collaboration with strong regional partners and use in real-life delivery operations provide us with valuable insights for future series production. The new hydrogen drive was developed by our sister company FPT in Arbon – a strong sign of Swiss technological expertise within the IVECO Group," says Domenico Nastasi, Managing Director of IVECO (Switzerland) AG.
