New Partnership: Uniper Supplies Q1 Energie AG with Bio-LNG
Uniper and Q1 Energie AG have concluded an agreement for the supply of bio-LNG. The renewable fuel will be made available for road freight transport via the Q1 bio-LNG network across several German federal states. The cooperation marks the first business relationship between the two companies and underscores their shared goal of further advancing lower-emission fuel solutions for heavy-duty transport.
Nils Beenen, Managing Director at Uniper Energy Sales GmbH: “Our collaboration with Q1 highlights the growing importance of bio-LNG in heavy-duty transport. With our integrated supply chain, we have the expertise to provide renewable gases along the entire value chain, from sourcing and liquefaction to supplying our customers.”
Sven Haberkorn, Head of Procurement & Tank Storage at Q1 Energie AG: “With Uniper, we are further expanding our supply capacities for certified bio-LNG and gaining another reliable partner with whom we can jointly drive the transition to lower-emission mobility.”
The sustainably produced biomethane is liquefied at the Gate terminal in Rotterdam using existing LNG infrastructure and temporarily stored as bio-LNG. It is transported in ISO tank containers from Rotterdam to a central storage facility in Germany, from where Q1 distributes it to filling stations based on demand. As the owner, importer, and marketer of the bio-LNG, Uniper is responsible for the entire supply chain—from biomethane transport and liquefaction to import into Germany—and is entitled to claim the resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) quotas.
The bio-LNG liquefied at the Gate terminal in Rotterdam is based on sustainably produced biogas sourced in an EU Member State and upgraded to biomethane. During this process, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are removed, resulting in a processed gas with natural gas quality. The biomethane is then fed into the natural gas grid, withdrawn at an offtake point, and liquefied using existing LNG infrastructure. The entire supply chain is certified under internationally recognized certification schemes approved by the European Commission in accordance with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
