OGE, Thyssengas and Gasunie Are Planning a Hydrogen Corridor Between Germany and the Netherlands

Open Grid Europe (OGE), Thyssengas, and the Dutch transmission system operator Gasunie have signed an agreement to establish a cross-border hydrogen corridor between Germany and the Netherlands. The plan is to connect the national hydrogen grids via the Zevenaar-Elten border crossing. To achieve this, existing natural gas pipelines will be converted to hydrogen transport wherever possible. The connection is scheduled to become operational in 2031.

The corridor will primarily connect industrial and chemical sites in Germany with hydrogen production, storage, and import capacities in the Netherlands. The initial phase will focus on connecting the Rhine-Ruhr region, with further south industrial centers such as Ludwigshafen to follow later. On the Dutch side, the Rhine Delta Corridor serves as a key link between the Port of Rotterdam and the German hydrogen grid.

The agreement was signed at the "Hydrogen Milestone Ceremony" in Rotterdam, which also marked the official completion of the first section of Gasunie's Dutch hydrogen grid. The partners emphasized their shared goal of developing hydrogen infrastructure in Northwest Europe across borders at an early stage.

OGE CEO Dr. Thomas Hüwener explained that strong European partnerships are crucial for ramping up the hydrogen economy. Utilizing existing infrastructure can accelerate expansion and make it more economical.
