RWE and TotalEnergies Agree Long-Term Offtake Agreement for Green Hydrogen
TotalEnergies and RWE have signed a contract for the supply of green hydrogen for the next 15 years. From 2030, RWE will supply around 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for the TotalEnergies refinery in Leuna (Saxony-Anhalt). This is the largest quantity of climate-neutral hydrogen ever contracted by an electrolysis plant in Germany. This volume will help to save around 300,000 tons of CO2 per year - roughly the same amount as 140,000 cars emit each year.
The contract is an important step towards reducing emissions in German industry. Fuel suppliers such as refineries must continuously reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The use of green hydrogen in the refinery helps to achieve these goals.
RWE's electrolysis plant in Lingen (Lower Saxony), which will go into operation by 2027, will produce hydrogen using electricity from renewable sources. For times when there is little wind or sun, RWE is relying on a hydrogen storage facility in Gronau-Epe to secure the supply.
This agreement supports the decarbonization of refineries that previously used fossil hydrogen. It is also a step towards achieving the EU's climate targets and strengthening the hydrogen economy in Germany. The expansion of the hydrogen core network, which connects production centers with consumption centers, is to be completed by 2032.
For Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, the agreement is an important boost for the hydrogen sector and shows how green hydrogen projects in industry can contribute to climate neutrality.
