Stuttgart Municipal Utilities Put Hydrogen Storage Facility into Operation

In August, Stuttgart's municipal utility company, Stadtwerke Stuttgart, installed four low-pressure hydrogen storage tanks at the Green Hydrogen Hub (GH2S) in Stuttgart-Wangen. The 22-meter-high tanks have a volume of 328 cubic meters and can hold approximately 2,100 kilograms of hydrogen. This would allow a hydrogen bus, for example, to travel up to 20,000 kilometers.

The tanks are intended for the intermediate storage of hydrogen that is not directly fed into a pipeline or trailer. This allows hydrogen to be produced independently of current market availability or offtake capacity, for example, when wind and solar power are available. The hydrogen can then be withdrawn as needed. The storage tanks thus contribute to a resilient and regionally based hydrogen supply.

At the inauguration, Peter Drausnigg, Technical Director of Stadtwerke Stuttgart, emphasized the importance of the storage tanks for the Green Hydrogen Hub: "The storage tanks connect hydrogen production and supply in a sensible and flexible way."
