Sunfire Begins Construction of a SOEC Test Facility in the Lausitz Industrial Park

In August, Sunfire and the Lausitz Industrial Park broke ground on a test facility for high-temperature electrolysis (SOEC) in Schwarzheide. There, Sunfire will test its latest and most powerful SOEC product generation under real-world industrial conditions over the long term and further develop it for large-scale deployment.

The technology utilizes waste heat available during hydrogen production, enabling it to achieve particularly high efficiencies. The technology used in Schwarzheide was further developed within the framework of the HTEL MODULE sub-project of H2Giga, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The test facility is intended to provide insights for industrial scaling and further secure the technological maturity for initial large-scale applications within the framework of an IPCEI (Individual Project for Chemical Engineering and Innovation).

Sunfire CEO Nils Aldag sees high-temperature electrolysis as a key lever for the decarbonization of industry. With the test facility, the company aims to further advance its SOEC strategy and accelerate the market ramp-up of the technology.
