Yara Commissions Europe's Largest Industrial CO₂ Capture Plant

Yara has officially commissioned Europe's largest industrial CO₂ capture plant at its Sluiskil site in the Netherlands. The plant will be able to capture and liquefy up to 800,000 tons of CO₂ per year from ammonia production. The CO₂ will then be transported by ship to Norway and permanently stored under the seabed as part of the Northern Lights project.

According to Yara, the commissioning of the plant creates the first complete cross-border value chain for the capture, transport, and permanent storage of CO₂. Over a period of 15 years, a total of up to twelve million tons of CO₂ from production in Sluiskil are expected to be captured and stored. The inauguration was marked by the presence of Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, and other representatives from the European Commission, as well as Yara.

Svein Tore Holsether, President and CEO of Yara International, emphasized the importance of the plant for Yara and European industry. "The carbon capture plant in Sluiskil proves that large-scale industrial decarbonization is already possible today. Given increasing global competition, Europe must find ways to reduce emissions while preserving industry, jobs, and key value chains in Europe. That is precisely what this project is about," Holsether continued.
