Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft sees Exploratory Partners on the Right Track but not yet at the Finish Line

The exploratory discussions between the CDU, CSU and SPD have set an important course for energy policy. Dr. Timm Kehler, CEO of Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft (The German Gas and Hydrogen Industry), sees numerous sensible steps in the exploratory paper. However, crucial details still need to be fine-tuned in the coalition negotiations to ensure a reliable, affordable and climate-neutral energy supply.

“From the perspective of the gas and hydrogen industry, the exploratory talks between the CDU, CSU and SPD provide the right impetus for a resilient, climate-neutral and affordable energy supply. One particularly positive aspect is the clear commitment to the construction of 20 gigawatts of new gas-fired power plants by 2030. These power plants are not only crucial for grid stability, but also for protecting consumers from rising electricity prices. Equally positive is the planned green gas quota, which is intended to bring climate-neutral gases onto the market. The announcement of a legislative package on carbon capture and storage (CCS) also shows that the future German government has pragmatic solutions for a climate-friendly industry in mind.

The exploratory partners recognize the importance of the hydrogen core grid and are committed to expanding it and supporting energy-intensive companies. This is an important step towards establishing Germany as a leading hydrogen location.

However, some points remain open. Biomethane as a climate-neutral gas source is not being strengthened and there is no clear perspective for hydrogen-capable power plants. There is also no mention of securing the long-term gas supply via LNG contracts. These issues are important for competitiveness and the achievement of climate targets and urgently need to be improved in the further negotiations.”
