New Cooperation Platform Aims to Create Market Access for Ukrainian Biomethane
- Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft and UkraineInvest are establishing a joint dialogue platform for Ukrainian biomethane imports.
- Action is needed to establish market access, ensure the recognition of guarantees of origin and create suitable transport conditions.
- Bergt: “Biomethane imports from Ukraine strengthen the security of supply of new gases in Germany and support economic development in Ukraine.”
Die Gas- Und Wasserstoffwirtschaft and UkraineInvest, the investment promotion agency of the Ukrainian Ministry of Economy, are establishing a new dialogue platform for biomethane imports. It will provide a framework in which stakeholders from business and politics can advance the use of biomethane for local reconstruction while also strengthening European energy security through new gases.
At the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2026 in Gdańsk, Die Gas- Und Wasserstoffwirtschaft and UkraineInvest signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a dialogue platform aimed at enabling biomethane imports. The objective is to support the economic development of Ukraine’s climate-friendly energy sector and facilitate the supply of new gases to Germany and Europe.
The dialogue platform will bring European, German and Ukrainian companies and institutions together to explore financing opportunities and develop joint policy positions for consideration in legislative processes. The partners see a particular need for action in creating market access, ensuring the mutual recognition of sustainability certifications and guarantees of origin, and establishing the conditions required for cross-border transport.
Bengt Bergt, Head of Public Affairs at Die Gas- Und Wasserstoffwirtschaft, considers biomethane a key pillar of the future energy mix: “Alongside domestic production, supplies from Ukraine will support the market ramp-up of biomethane in Germany and Europe, as Ukraine’s production potential is enormous.” Forecasts indicate an annual production volume of 11 TWh by 2030. The country’s total potential is estimated at up to 220 TWh. Germany’s nationwide market potential is estimated at 102 TWh by 2030 and 331 TWh by 2045. Biomethane imports from Ukraine could therefore make a significant contribution to securing the supply of new gases.
Bergt adds: “With its extensive agricultural sector and existing energy infrastructure, Ukraine offers ideal conditions for biomethane production. In addition, large areas of agricultural land can no longer be used for food production due to war damage but remain suitable for growing energy crops. Through the new dialogue platform, we aim to support the reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy sector in a way that enables its production capacity to contribute to the market ramp-up of biomethane in Germany while also supporting the country’s economic recovery.”
“Ukraine is currently putting the necessary conditions in place to establish itself as a reliable supplier of biomethane to the European market. With an estimated sustainable biomass potential equivalent to 21.8 billion cubic metres per year and seven biomethane plants currently in operation, the sector is now entering a phase of commercial development. Biogas and biomethane projects currently account for around 12 per cent of UkraineInvest’s energy investment pipeline by number of projects,” says Maryna Khlystun, Executive Director of UkraineInvest.
Over the coming months, the partners intend to take further joint steps to establish the platform and begin its work before the end of this year.
