Progress That Secures Supply: Application Phase for the Innovation Award New Gases 2026 Launched

  • The Innovation Award New Gases will once again be presented this year by the BDEW, DVGW and Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft.
  • Market-ready and scalable projects along the entire value chain are being sought.
  • Applications are open now until 31 July 2026.

The transformation of the energy system towards climate neutrality is currently more than ever caught between the competing priorities of security of supply, affordability, and climate protection. This is precisely where new gases come into play: hydrogen, its derivatives, and biomethane make a decisive contribution to a resilient energy system that functions reliably even under challenging conditions. Against this backdrop, the Innovation Award New Gases will once again be presented this year.

The award has been presented every two years since 1980 and honors outstanding projects that advance the energy transition with innovative technologies and practical solutions. The focus is on pioneering approaches that demonstrate how new gases concretely contribute to transformation—from production to transport and infrastructure, all the way to end-use applications.

Innovation for a resilient energy system

The energy transition is already well underway. Technologies are available, and projects are entering the market—what matters now is scaling them up. The Innovation Award New Gases highlights that renewable and decarbonised gases make a tangible contribution to security of supply, resilience, industrial transformation, and climate neutrality.

Projects are sought in the following three categories:

  • Production
  • Transport and Infrastructure
  • Application Technologies

In addition, a public choice award will be presented.

Companies, start-ups, and research institutions can apply now until 31 July 2026. More information about the Innovation Award New Gases and the application process can be found at innovationspreis-neue-gase.de.

The award is organised by the three industry associations: the BDEW, the DVGW, and Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft.
