Introducing Magali Metrailler - Red Dot Jury 2027 🔴 With more than 20 years of experience in watch design, Swiss designer Magali Métrailler brings expertise in precision, craftsmanship and product development to the jury. As former Senior Watch Designer at Jaeger-LeCoultre, she worked on iconic timepieces including the Gyrotourbillon I and II. She has also collaborated with international brands such as Aston Martin, BMW and TAG Heuer. 💬 What turns a well-designed product into an award-worthy one? An award-winning product must not merely be aesthetically pleasing. A great product goes beyond its visual image; its true value lies in what it transmits and its ability to tell a story that sparks genuine interest. It is precisely this extra touch of depth and meaning that makes all the difference. 💬 What has been the most valuable lesson throughout your career? The most valuable lesson is one word: time. You have to know how to take your time. A sketch is never an end in itself. It is the physical prototype that teaches us the most: the touch, the actual feel, the subtle perception of materials and volumes. Welcome Kadri Tamme - Red Dot Jury 2027! 🔴 From Estonian Embassies in Prague, Seoul and Riga to the new Estonian National Broadcasting building - (ERR) television building, Telemaja: Tallinn-based interior architect Kadri Tamme designs spaces with longevity in mind. Since 2012, she has led her own practice Kadri Tamme Sisearhitektuur OÜ, combining craftsmanship, materials and attention to detail. 💬 When you first encounter a product, what do you instinctively look for? I look at the joint - how two materials meet, how a corner is resolved, how it feels to the touch. As interior architects, we live in the 1:1 detail. That small connection tells me everything about the respect for the maker, the user and the material. Then I step back to see if the product has a calm presence without needing to shout. 💬 Which quality is often underestimated in product design? The ability to age and to belong to a space. We overvalue novelty and undervalue quietness, repairability and patina. 💬 Product design should be more about ___ and less about ___. Young Professional success story: Tuo Chen! 🏆 What if a simple water bowl could make everyday life easier for pets and their owners? With BOBO & BOWL, Red Dot winner Tuo Chen has turned a familiar water bowl into a thoughtful design solution. A floating glass disc helps prevent splashing, keeps the water clean and integrates naturally into the home. For Tuo, receiving a Red Dot has brought both “independent validation” for his work and “greater credibility” for his young design brand, TUOC. But the recognition also means something more personal: “the mental strength that comes from being seen after devoting so much time and energy to an uncertain idea.” 💬 What’s your top tip for young designers just starting out? “Follow your passion and learn to enjoy the hard work it asks of you. […] I would also encourage young designers to put their work into the world before it feels completely ready. Meet Johanna Kartinen - Red Dot Jury 2027 🔴 From plastics engineering to industrial design and craftsmanship: Helsinki-based Johanna Kaartinen is an expert in Color & Materials (CMF) design. She previously worked with Volvo Cars and Polestar, contributing to the Volvo EX30, which received Red Dot: Best of the Best in 2024. Since 2023, she has worked as an independent design consultant across material research, strategy and advisory. 💬 Which quality is often underestimated in product design? The feeling. Our brains run on two systems, emotional and logical, and there's a lot of emphasis on the rational side, but the emotional territory is often what actually makes us choose what we choose. The feeling someone experiences when using the product is, in essence, the product itself, and it should be designed with just as much care as a hinge. 💬 Is there a common misconception about good design that you would like to challenge? That using expensive materials makes a product luxury. [...] Premium earns its value through what the product does and luxury earns it through what it symbolises. 💡 One piece of advice to emerging designers: Learn to explain how your proposal connects to business outcomes. Cost has a bad reputation among designers, but it shouldn’t. Design isn’t separate from the business that creates it. Introducing Joe Slatter - Red Dot Jury 2027! 🔴 London-based industrial designer Joe Slatter works at Goodwin Hartshorn and co-founded Design Burger, a global industrial design community. Having been selected through the Young Professionals Application Day in 2024, he now joins the Red Dot Jury 2027, bringing both a designer’s and curator’s perspective. 💬 What turns a well-designed product into an award-worthy one? For me, an award-worthy product is about much more than just the physical object itself. Every aspect of the experience should feel considered. Every touchpoint should demonstrate the same level of care and attention to detail. Most importantly, the product needs to have a deep understanding of its user and a clear reason for existing. 💬 What responsibility do designers have beyond creating beautiful products? I think designers have a responsibility to help shape the cultural narrative rather than simply follow it. Products can become cultural objects in their own right, carrying meaning and creating communities. As designers, we have an opportunity to lead from the front and make product design feel as culturally relevant, expressive and influential as fashion. 💡 One piece of advice to emerging designers: Carve out opportunities yourself rather than waiting for them to come to you. Who knew centuries-old vampire folklore could be this entertaining? 🧛   Just in time for spooky season, Real Vampires brings the eerie vampire beliefs of Poland and Eastern Europe into the digital age! Welcome Gesa Hansen - Red Dot Jury 2027 🔴 Raised in a family of cabinetmakers, designers and architects, German-Danish designer Gesa Hansen has craftsmanship in her DNA. Based near Paris, she leads Studio Gesa Hansen, working across furniture, product design and interiors. Now, she brings her international perspective to the Red Dot Jury 2027. 💬 What turns a well-designed product into an award-worthy one? A product becomes award-worthy when every decision seems to belong to the same idea. Its form should serve its use, its material should make sense, and it should feel right in the hand or in the space it occupies. The strongest ones keep revealing their quality long after the first impression. 💬 Which quality is often underestimated in product design? I think proportion is underestimated. A difference of a few millimetres can change the comfort of a chair or the way an object relates to a room. When the relationship between an object, the body and its surroundings is right, people feel it even if they cannot exactly say why. 💡 One piece of advice to emerging designers: Keep an archive of all your ideas and sketches. Welcome to the Red Dot Jury 2027, Francesca Lanzavecchia! 🔴 The Milan-based designer and Creative Director is co-founder of Lanzavecchia + Wai and leads Francesca Lanzavecchia Studio. Her approach combines craftsmanship, material research and storytelling – what she calls “industrial poetry”. 💬 What are you most excited about as you join our jury? What excites me most is the chance to step outside my own practice and take a close look at such a broad cross-section of product design today. I am curious to see which ideas, materials and approaches feel genuinely relevant when you encounter the objects themselves, beyond images and communication. I am equally looking forward to the exchange with the other jurors, because different perspectives can completely change the way you read a product. 💬 Which quality do you believe is often underestimated in product design? I think care is still underestimated. By care, I mean designing for people as they really are, with different ages, bodies, abilities and moments of fragility, rather than for an abstract ideal user. Often the best design simply makes life easier, more intuitive or more dignified without drawing attention to the fact that it is doing so. 💬 What has been the most valuable lesson you've learned throughout your career? Probably to listen. Young Professional success story: Arnau Donate Duch! 🏆 One year ago, Arnau took part in the Young Professionals Application Day. Now in 2026, he is a Red Dot winner with the product Phare C1, an AI-powered smoke detector that reimagines everyday safety. Inspired by his experiences after moving from Barcelona to London, Arnau developed a product that combines intelligent hazard detection with an intuitive interface and a design that integrates naturally into the home. 💬 In what ways has participating in the Red Dot Award: Product Design impacted your growth or career as a young professional? When I was a design student I looked up to the Red Dot Award. [...] Having received an award now, 10 years later, closes that circle and carries a lot of meaning. Walk Me is Red Dot: Luminary 2026! 🏆   Developed by @toyotamotorcorporation (Japan), Walk Me has been named the Red Dot: Luminary 2026. Combining advanced robotics with a soft, furniture-inspired appearance, the highest honour in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept goes to the four-legged mobility partner that reimagines inclusive mobility, supporting independence, dignity and emotional connection.   The grand finale was marked by a special moment on stage, where Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, presented the Red Dot: Luminary trophy to Mr Takashi Nishimura and Ms Misako Kawata.   A fantastic celebration and award night to remember!
