IMSA: Mikkel Jensen Ready for LMP2 Action at Favorite Track
After a disappointing Le Mans, Mikkel Jensen is hoping for redemption at Watkins Glen, as the third round of the American LMP2 Championship takes place this weekend.
Just a week after the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Mikkel Jensen is back behind the wheel. This time, the Dane swaps his Hypercar for an LMP2 machine as he gears up for round three of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s LMP2 category at Watkins Glen – a track he calls his favorite in the American series.
“It’s a circuit where you can really take advantage of the car’s downforce and push hard. We race in identical machinery, and if things go as they usually do, it’ll be six hours of close racing from start to finish. That’s exactly the kind of race you want after a Le Mans where we were hopelessly off the pace,” says Mikkel Jensen.
Jensen is especially looking forward to returning to Watkins Glen, having won the event twice in previous years. Another victory would be a welcome result, as Jensen and his TDS Racing teammates, Steven Thomas and Hunter McElrea, are playing catch-up after a challenging season opener at Daytona.
“Luckily, we managed to grab a podium at Sebring, and we’re currently sitting fourth in the championship standings. The title is still within reach, but we need to deliver for the rest of the season. I’m hoping we can repeat our success from the past two years here at Watkins Glen,” the Dane adds.
Qualifying for this year’s edition of Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen takes place on Saturday, June 21. Jensen, Thomas, and McElrea will be up against 11 other cars in the LMP2 field for the race, which goes green on Sunday, June 22 at 12:10 p.m. local time – 6:10 p.m. Danish time. The full race will be broadcast live on Viaplay.
