Kevin Magnussen disappointed after frustrating WEC race in Texas
The Danish BMW factory driver fought a relentless battle at Circuit of The Americas, where difficult weather conditions and a lack of performance left their mark on round six of the FIA WEC.
Things did not go as planned for Kevin Magnussen, Dries Vanthoor and Raffaele Marciello, who finished outside the top 10 after a surprisingly difficult race at Circuit of The Americas. Following preparations full of optimism, round six of the FIA World Endurance Championship turned into a fight against the weather gods in a six-hour race where BMW M Team WRT was unable to find the necessary performance in the factory Hypercar.
“It simply didn’t go as we had expected, unfortunately. The weather conditions were certainly a challenge, but they were the same for everyone, and we simply failed to deliver the performance required to be in the fight. We need to go home, analyze why we struggled so much and be better prepared for the next round at Fuji,” said Kevin Magnussen.
The Dane started the race from eighth place in the Hypercar class, and due to heavy rain, the opening hour was run at low speed behind the safety car before a red flag temporarily brought proceedings to a halt. When the race was finally restarted, it quickly became clear that it would be a long run for the German Hypercar, which had to fight hard to keep up with the competition.
While several other cars were forced to retire from the race due to collisions, accidents, and technical issues, Magnussen, Vanthoor, and Marciello managed to complete the demanding contest and crossed the finish line in 12th place. The trio will be back in action when the seventh and penultimate round of the FIA World Endurance Championship takes place on September 28 at Japan’s Fuji Speedway.
