Press release —
Mathias Villadsen joins forces with star drivers for GT3 season finale
The young Danish racing talent will share his BMW with Le Mans winner Jan Magnussen and BMW factory driver Charles Weerts as he targets victory in the Italian GT3 championship finale at Mugello this weekend.
Mathias Villadsen is more than ready for the season finale of the Italian GT3 championship, Campionato Italiano Gran Turismo, which takes place at Mugello this weekend with a three-hour endurance race. The young Danish driver will once again compete with BMW team Team Spirit Racing – but this time with a particularly strong driver line-up.
Alongside Villadsen and his regular Endurance teammate Jan Magnussen, the team will be joined by Belgian BMW factory driver Charles Weerts, who has several major GT championship titles to his name. It will be the first time this season that Team Spirit Racing has entered a three-driver line-up.
Villadsen heads into the finale on the back of a strong result. At the most recent round of the Italian GT3 championship at Monza – the final Sprint round of the season – the Dane secured second place alongside Weerts, who joined the team for the final two race weekends of the year.
“We have high expectations for the finale. Charles was a huge asset to the team at Monza, bringing a lot of skill and experience. We came away with a podium finish and learned a great deal, especially me. We're stepping things up for Mugello, and with Jan back in the car, there's no doubt that we mean business,” says Mathias Villadsen.
The finale marks the end of Villadsen's first season in GT3 racing, during which the former GT4 driver has had to adapt to both a new car and a significantly higher level of competition. His season has included a second-place finish in the Endurance season opener at Misano, and the ambition is now to finish the year with another strong result.
“It's definitely going to be a tough race. As always, we're up against some very strong teams with factory backing, but we're here to win. Above all, it's about finishing the season on a positive note. The whole team has worked incredibly hard throughout the year to give us the best possible conditions, and it would be great to reward that effort with a good result,“ Villadsen adds.
More than 50 cars are entered for the Campionato Italiano Gran Turismo season finale, which takes place at Mugello Circuit on Sunday, 1 November. The three-hour race gets underway at 13:15 local time (CET).
