Vast differences across Europe in making ends meet

Greece has the highest proportion of households in Europe reporting difficulties in making ends meet with 58% of respondents saying they have ‘difficulty’ or ‘great difficulty’. This is significantly ahead of Croatia, the second placed country, where 34% said that they have experienced difficulties.

The European Quality of Life Survey 2016 highlights vast differences in reported abilities to make ends meet at household level in Europe. At the other end of the scale, just 3% of respondents in Sweden reported difficulties in making ends meet at household level. Luxembourg and Finland were also strongly placed at 5% and 6% respectively. On average, 16% of respondents across the EU say they have difficulties in making ends meet.

The European Quality of Life Survey is a unique, pan-European survey that examines both the objective circumstances of citizens' lives as well as how they feel about those circumstances and their lives in general, creating a rich data source on the quality of life of the people in Europe.
