Shortcut Labs launches automatic Fall Detection on Flic Duo for workplace and care safety apps
Shortcut Labs releases Fall Detection for Flic Duo, available to partners building lone worker, personal safety and care applications on the Flic SDKs for iOS and Android.
Stockholm, Sweden, September 1, 2026. Shortcut Labs today released Fall Detection for Flic Duo. The feature uses the Duo's built-in accelerometer to recognise the motion pattern of a fall and notifies the connected app, so an alert can be raised in the moments when the wearer cannot reach the button themselves.
"A panic button only helps if the person is able to push it," said Joacim Westlund Prändel, CEO and co-founder of Shortcut Labs. "Fall Detection covers the moment they cannot. It is a second signal that sits alongside a press for help."
Fall Detection is available now for iOS and Android. Partners set their own sensitivity thresholds, receive accelerometer data from before and after the impact, and can trigger the Duo's buzzer to tell the wearer that an event was detected and give them a chance to cancel before the alert escalates.
“Partner interest in Fall Detection came in faster than we planned for,” said Dirk Lüders, VP Corporate Relations at Shortcut Labs. “The SDK side is holding up well; the bottleneck now is onboarding and fulfilling the orders already on the table.”
How it works
Fall Detection is threshold-based. The Duo watches the acceleration magnitude for a low-G period that indicates falling, then waits for a high-G impact inside a configurable window. When both conditions are met, the SDK reports a triggered state, collects accelerometer samples from before the impact, and keeps recording for a set period afterwards.
That pre and post event data is what makes the feature practical in the field. Partners can judge severity and filter false positives from the signal itself: little or no movement after the impact suggests the person may have passed out, and comparing orientation before and after separates someone dropping onto a sofa from someone lying on the ground.

Shortcut Labs recommends wearing the Duo on a lanyard around the neck, worn under the shirt and not too loose, which keeps the device close to the body and reduces movement that can affect detection. Because the feature runs the accelerometer continuously and works best with always-reconnect enabled, partners should account for the effect on battery life when they design their product.
Positioning and limitations
Fall Detection is a workplace and personal safety signal, not a medical device, and Shortcut Labs makes no medical claims for it. Detection is based on motion thresholds, so it can miss falls, trigger late, or produce false positives depending on configuration, how the device is worn, connectivity and host app behaviour. The feature is intended to support existing escalation and care arrangements rather than replace them or replace a manual press for help.
