Press release —
Swedish fighters in dual interceptions of Russian aircraft
On Friday, the Swedish Air Force's Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) conducted two scrambles with JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to intercept Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea near Swedish airspace.
The two incidents occurred in the southern and eastern parts of the Baltic Sea and involved one Russian Su-24 and one Russian Su-34.
The Swedish QRA responded swiftly upon detecting the Russian flights, and two pairs of JAS 39 Gripen jets were scrambled to assert national sovereignty and intercept and identify the Russian military aircraft. Swedish airspace was not violated during either incident.
Due to the deteriorated security situation over the last period of time Sweden has adapted its posture and increased the readiness of our Air Force to meet the increased threat to Allied air space.
