Digital University, Real Impact: German UDS Celebrates Its Anniversary
On April 1, 2025, the German University of Digital Science (German UDS) launched its teaching and research operations as Germany’s first fully digital university. One year later, the numbers speak for themselves: more than 100 students from over 20 countries, 17 professors, and a course portfolio of four master’s programs and two MBAs, with an additional five planned.
German UDS: Vision Becomes Reality
The German UDS emerged over the course of a decade from the vision of an open, digitally shaped academic space. The idea dates back to 2017, when Prof. Dr. Mike Friedrichsen institutionally anchored a concrete university concept through the establishment of a non-profit sponsoring organization. In 2022, the university moved to Potsdam, and in 2023 the strategic unification of the concepts developed by Friedrichsen and Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel, who had also long envisioned founding a digital university, took place.
This formed the foundation of what ultimately became the German UDS. After an extensive review process involving multiple accreditation bodies, the university finally began enrolling students on April 1, 2025, marking the first private university founding in Germany in over a decade and a new lighthouse project for a digitally oriented academic culture.
A Unique Concept
The German UDS focuses its research and teaching on the core topics of digital transformation: From artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to digital leadership. Founders and presidents Prof. Dr. Mike Friedrichsen and Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel emphasize innovative, interactive learning formats and the consistent use of Design Thinking as a methodology to equip students not only with specialist knowledge but also with a mindset fit for the 21st century.
In addition to full degree programs, the university offers Micro Degrees that enable working professionals to expand their competencies in a targeted and time-efficient manner, fully aligned with the principles of lifelong learning.
With its “University as a Service” model, the German UDS goes one step further: University functions, ranging from teaching and examinations to administration and career development, are offered as modular services, making the institution a flexible resource for academia and industry alike.
Successes and Challenges: Conversation with the Founders
In a special episode of the German UDS podcast From Campus to Cyber, Prof. Dr. Mike Friedrichsen and Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel openly and honestly reflect on the first year of the German UDS.
They explain that the central challenge lies in attracting future students to a novel teaching concept while simultaneously creating a genuine sense of belonging through collaboratively designed degree programs. But this is also where the strengths of a digital university become clear. As Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel emphasizes: “Enrolling with us helps students earn a degree that adapts to their lives.”
Both presidents were particularly impressed by the first cohort of students: within the first year, research was published, conferences were attended, and in April the German UDS will celebrate its first MBA graduates. Looking ahead, the plan is to establish international branches to connect students worldwide.
As Prof. Dr. Friedrichsen summarizes: “There will be further challenges, but founding Germany’s first digital university was the right decision.”
Looking Ahead
On April 24, 2026, the German UDS will honor its graduates with a commencement ceremony at the Cloudhouse in Potsdam before the second university year fully gets underway.
Graduate Christian Lang says about his studies: “What I love most about studying at the German University of Digital Science is the unique mix of disciplines - from technology and business to science and social sciences. This multidimensional approach has truly expanded the way I think about complex problem-solving. I feel like I’m gaining a modern, highly practical toolset that’s immediately applicable in the real world.”
Looking further ahead, the university is already preparing for the next program start in October, launching five new MBA programs and a new Master of Science in Quantum Computing.
