Green Cargo has transported freight for St1 for 25 years

And now, St1 and Green Cargo are celebrating a close, 25-year partnership. A partnership where the focus on high quality and secure transportation has resulted in almost 11,000,000 tonnes of freight being delivered from St1 in Gothenburg to depots in Jönköping and Karlstad. Through 25 years of rail transportation rather than road or sea freight, St1 and Green Cargo have reduced climate impact by a total of 114,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

On 4 November 2020, Green Cargo will have transported almost 11,000,000 tonnes of freight for St1 for 25 years. Transporting freight via rail is not only climate-smart – it is also the more space-efficient transportation alternative. St1 has delivered approximately 3,500,000 tonnes of freight via rail between Jönköping and Gothenburg. This is equivalent to 125,000 trucks. And by choosing rail transportation rather than sea freight between Karlstad and Gothenburg, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by roughly 98% for this route. Not only is the partnership between Green Cargo and St1 significant for the environment, it also leads to safer roads.

“Rail transportation has worked incredibly well over the years. Delivery reliability has always been high and the partnership with Green Cargo has worked fabulously. This is why we have been a faithful customer for all of these years. Transporting fuel via rail rather than by ship or truck has proved very efficient for us and been very eco-friendly,” says Jonas Rylander, Terminal Operations Manager West, St1 Sverige AB.

St1 has always maintained a natural interest in making use of climate-smart and secure transportation rather than transportation alternatives such as maritime and road freight. Single-commodity trains transport the cargo from St1’s facilities in Gothenburg to depots in Jönköping and Karlstad. A total of ten trains depart every week, five to Jönköping and five to Karlstad, with cargo classified as hazardous goods.

“Our partnership is well-founded in a proactive working method for which security, responsiveness and flexibility are important factors. To maintain the high quality of our single-commodity trains, we hold regular meetings in which we take into account needs and challenges that have arisen, and make sure to come up with the most suitable logistics solutions,” says Björn Nordh, sales executive at Green Cargo.

Green Cargo and St1 work continuously to find new routes for St1’s products – using the railway of course.

St1 is a Nordic energy group with operations in Sweden, Finland and Norway. With a vision to be the leading producer and seller of CO2-aware energy, operations encompass everything from the production of fuel that reduces climate and environmental impact to the development of tomorrow’s smart petrol stations and stores. The company has a total of 480 petrol stations across Sweden.
