HX Unveils New Norway Expedition for Winter 2026

Inspired by Friluftsliv, the art of open-air living, this immersive seven-night journey spent entirely above the Arctic Circle explores Norway's natural wonders and cultural heritage

London, UK (May 9, 2024)HX today unveiled a new Northern Norway itinerary, set to launch in January 2026 at the peak of the aurora season: "Ultimate Norway – Arctic Expedition Under the Northern Lights." Inspired by the Norwegian concept of Friluftsliv or 'free air life,' which embodies the value Norwegians place on spending time in nature and the outdoors, the itinerary will spend seven nights entirely above the Arctic Circle.

“Since our first expedition in 1896 in Norway, HX has helped guests to immerse themselves in some of the most incredible and remote places on earth,” said Alex McNeil, SVP Expeditions Product and Guest Experience. “While we've expanded our horizons and destinations over the last 128 years, our Norwegian heritage remains. We're excited to unveil this unparalleled adventure that honors our roots and highlights our expertise in expedition today.”

The expedition will explore four iconic regions in Northern Norway: the Lyngen Alps, Senja, Lofoten, and Vesterålen, uncovering hidden gems in each during ten scheduled sailings from January to March 2026. Departing from and returning to Tromsø, the expedition aboard MS Spitsbergen promises a completely all-inclusive experience.

Guests will delve deep into Norwegian culture and the spectacular winter landscapes through three bespoke experiences unique to HX, including a bonfire under the polar night, an exclusive evening at the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes, and a traditional Scandinavian sauna session followed by a polar plunge.

Additionally, the itinerary includes a variety of activities such as kayaking, whale watching, nature walks, alpine treks, snowshoeing, community visits, and ski touring, ensuring a rich and diverse adventure.

Small expedition cruising
With a capacity for 160 guests, MS Spitsbergen creates an intimate and relaxing atmosphere while also being small enough to venture to places other ships can’t reach. The ship caters to all tastes and needs, featuring Scandinavian décor, comfortable cabins, a wealth of public spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows for watching the world pass by, an observation deck, Science Centre and two restaurants.

Adventure is All-Inclusive
The all-inclusive adventure offers three daily meals, drinks, coffee, tea, and soft drinks available throughout the day. Guests will enjoy access to the sauna, hot tub, fitness center, and a world-leading onboard Science Centre. The package also includes gratuities, daily excursions, expedition gear, a water bottle, broadband Wi-Fi, and professional photos of the trip taken by the onboard photographer.

Northern Lights Promise
With seven days spent entirely above the Arctic Circle and long winter nights with no light pollution, guests can experience the perfect conditions to witness the Northern Lights. With HX’s Northern Lights Promise, if there is no recorded sighting of the Northern Lights from the ship during the expedition cruise, guests will receive a Future Cruise Credit worth up to 1,200 EUR per person towards a new HX voyage.

McNeil concluded, “We know Norway better than any cruise company, and this expedition connects deeply with the coast. Our guests can anticipate a truly authentic experience, whether they’re in search of the Northern Lights, local culture, or some of the most awe-inspiring nature on earth.”
