EuroHockey Championship 2023: The German Hockey Federation is marketing the EuroHockey 2023 in collaboration with two strong partners

Mönchengladbach/Cologne/Lohmar. Many years of experience in the area of sports sponsoring, interdisciplinary, cross-media marketing expertise and individual tools for brand staging — from now on, the DHB is relying on experienced partners when it comes to the marketing of the EuroHockey 2023. Collaboratively, the Brand Galaxy Group and inMedias Kommunikation will advise the DHB about the professional marketing of the EuroHockey Championship 2023 in the Mönchengladbach HockeyPark and will offer support in marketing the sponsoring assets and areas.

“We have opted for this collaboration because the agencies convinced us with their enthusiasm for our sport, their brand knowledge in sponsoring and their excellent contacts to potential new partners; in short: the chemistry was right immediately,” says Niclas Thiel, Commercial Director of the DHB.

EuroHockey Championship 2023 in Mönchengladbach

After 12 years, Europe’s most important hockey tournament is returning to Germany. From 18 to 27 August 2023, 16 international top teams with 8 teams per sex will fight for the European championship title in the course of 40 games in the Mönchengladbach HockeyPark. The winning teams will be rewarded with direct qualification for the Olympics in Paris in 2024. Up to 100,000 spectators are expected to enthusiastically cheer on the teams in Germany’s biggest hockey stadium.

“40 games within 10 days will offer numerous sporting highlights and the best entertainment,” says Nina Holtgrewe, Event Director at DHB. “We expect nation-wide and international TV broadcasts as well as a wide media reach, also in the top hockey nations such as the Netherlands, Belgium and England. In collaboration with the Brand Galaxy Group and inMedias Kommunikation, we want to direct this potential systematically towards prospective sponsors and win attractive partners.”

In the future, both agencies will work closely together with the management level of the DHB and the organisers of the EuroHockey 2023 and will develop attractive partner offers for the prime target group. “The successes and the Olympic tradition of the sport as well as the professionality of this premium event generate excitement,” says Markus Bartha, Managing Director of inMedias Kommunikation. “For potential partners from every part of Germany, the considerable impact of the EuroHockey Championship 2023 grants direct access to a very exciting and very exclusive target group that can hardly or not at all be addressed by means of traditional advertising.”

Heiner Prignitz, Managing Director of the Brand Galaxy Group, adds: “Together, we will exploit all possible synergies, since in hockey, there is a big market for successful brand partnerships. The EuroHockey Championship does not only provide a highly emotional, very exclusive platform and excellent potential for communication for local companies and brands, but is also a real premium offer for successful marketing, social media content and broad PR for nation-wide partners.”

Field hockey is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. The DHB has around 100,000 members who actively play hockey and the trend is on the rise: even during the pandemic, the DHB was the only team sport federation to sustain a slight increase in members. Having collected 15 Olympic medals since 1928, hockey is the most successful Olympic ball game in Germany. On top of that, the national teams of the Germany Hockey Federation have received 17 world and 62 European championship titles. Just in July 2022, the female under-21 team clinched the European championship title and the male under-21 team the silver medal.

In fact, the proportion of female and male players in field and indoor hockey in Germany is roughly equal. Also in the fostering of new talents, both sexes receive the same attention.

“Once you have experienced this fascinating sport live, you won't be able to shake off the dynamics and passion,” says Niclas Thiel. “Speed, precision and excellent athleticism are only a few aspects that make up the fascination that is hockey! Moreover, great personalities who stand for real values, in a sportive as well as a societal way, play this sport.”

For example, the German women’s hockey team initiated a sustainability campaign in 2020 by founding the “DANAS Hockey Forest” in South Africa. The initiative aims to contribute in reducing the ecological footprint that they leave behind during their sports career. In addition, the DHB has committed itself to the issue of preventing sexualised violence in sports and is part of the “Safe Sport” campaign of the German Olympic Sports Confederation and the German Sport Youth. In the area of inclusion, the DHB is also entering its own special hockey team for the Special Olympic World Games 2023 in Berlin, as one of only two demonstration sports.
