    1955年、日本楽器製造（現在のヤマハ株式会社）からモーターサイクル事業を引き継いで創立したヤマハ発動機は、続いて船外機・ボートを中心とするマリン事業にも進出。さらにこれら製品の核となる小型エンジン技術、車体・艇体技術を活かした事業の多軸化に取り組む一方、自社生産ラインの自動化をはかるために開発した産業用ロボットの事業化にも成功。そこから電子制御技術を発展させ、事業領域を超えた新製品開発や新事業開拓に役立てています。2017年9月に発表した「CELL HANDLER（セルハンドラー）™」もそのひとつで、電子基板の生産に使われるサーフェスマウンターの技術を応用し、バイオメディカル分野に進出する最初の製品となりました。今回は、その画期的な装置の概要と今後の期待についてご紹介します。
