Liseberg’s comments on the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority's report on the fire at Oceana Waterworld
The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (AIA) has concluded its investigation regarding the fire at Oceana and has presented the final report. It is a thorough and well-founded report with important lessons for all involved parties.
The Accident Investigation Authority states in its report that the fire likely started in connection with an electrical sleeve welding of a diversion pipe in one of the water slides on the outside of Oceana.
The AIA provides safety recommendations to four parties, including Liseberg, which is recommended to continue developing the company’s health and safety processes and procedures in connection with building projects.
- Liseberg has great confidence in the AIA’s work and their expertise, and we have done our outmost to assist them during the investigation. Liseberg takes the safety recommendations very seriously, and we are grateful for all observations that not only make us but the entire industry better, says Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg.
- We all must learn from this incident. Otherwise, the fire becomes even more meaningless. And that is the real purpose of the report, to make us all – property-owners, contractors, and suppliers – better, says Andreas Andersen.
Liseberg has already in place comprehensive requirements on suppliers to the company, however the AIA states in their report that the systematic follow-up work that was in place at the time can and should be strengthened to ensure that the requirements set are followed.
The safety recommendations proposed by the commission in its final report havebeen incorporated into the organization. Going forward, Liseberg, in its role as property owner, will continuously work to further strengthen internal processes and routines for systematic health and safety efforts.
Implemented measures include:
- Updating internal control documents and manuals.
- Strengthening control of Liseberg's contracted suppliers.
- Extra third-party control of existing fire protection measures to identify reinforcing measures.
The purpose of the commission's investigation is to clarify what happened, why it happened, and how a similar event can be avoided in the future. The issue of liability is handled by separate investigations.
