Akvaplan-niva is a partner to Longyearbyen Science and Education Forum (LySEF)

LySEF is a forum for the coordination of different scientific institutions and research activities in Longyearbyen, similar to the functions of NySMAC (The Ny-Ålesund Science Managers Committee). All institutions with interests in science and education, or which performs fieldwork or other activities within or with outspring in Longyearbyen - can become members of LySEF.

The process of establishing the LySEF forum started during autumn of 2007. The process was led by several institutions located in the Svalbard Science Centre in Longyearbyen. LySEF held its first official meeting in May 2008.

Last week a very successful LySEF event took place in Longyearbyen. This included visits to the Kjell Henriksen Observatory (KHO) and the EISCAT radar (European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association) as well as a guided trip to other industrial sites and research stations in the area. Reporters from BBC and Icepeople covered the event.
