Siden 50-tallet er det produsert mer en 8 milliarder tonn plast på verdensbasis. En betydelig del av denne plasten havner i havet hvor det akkumuleres på havbunnen og langs strendene. Dette er ikke bare et visuelt problem, men det utgjør også en fare for marine dyr i havet og langs kysten. Noe av plasten brytes også ned til mikroplast.

Alexei Bambulyak from Akvaplan-niva participated in a panel and a presentation on MALINOR, DIMARC and ArcToMal projects at the first webinar in a webinar series on Marine Litter in the Barents Sea arranged by GRID-Arendal and Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU). Denne uken presenterer Claudia Halsband og Frank Beuchel postere på en digital versjon av the International Symposium on Plastics in the Arctic and subarctic region i Reykjavik. Hovedfokus på arrangementet er effekter at plast i havet på marint liv.

Årets TV-aksjon går i år til WWFs arbeid med å bekjempe plastforsøpling av havene. I den anledning inviterte UiT Norges arktiske universitet en gruppe ungdomsskoleelever fra Norges Toppidrettsgymnas Ungdomsskole (NTG-U) i Tromsø til et møte med fire forskere som jobber med dette problemet til daglig.

Citizen science eller folkeforskning bistår forskere til innsamling av data samt til økt bevissthet og engasjement om miljøspørsmål hos de som deltar. Akvaplan-niva er engasjert i flere slike prosjekter hvor blant annet elever ved en videregående skole og cruiseturister bidrar til datainnsamling.
In September Carl Ballantine from Akvaplan-niva joined a Svalbard cruise with Hurtigruten as part of an extension citizen science project of the MALINOR project, funded by the Research Council of Norway. This citizen science project "Arctic Tourism in the Barents Sea" (ArcToMaL) which is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment.
Last week the “Remote sensing” fieldwork in the MALINOR project started at Varanger-halvøya in the eastern part of Finnmark county, Norway. Drone-pilot Lars Semb from Maritime Robotics and Frank Beuchel from Akvaplan-niva participated in the fieldwork. They mapped 3 beach locations in the proximity to the city of Vardø, using Multicopter-drones, operated by project partner Maritime Robotics.
Next week Perrine Geraudie from Akvaplan-niva will join a cruise going from Longyearbyen to Franz Josef Land with the Russian cruise operator Poseidon Expeditions. The name of the boat is Sea Spirit and he cruise lasts from 13-26 August. During the cruise Geraudie will assist tourists in collecting data on plastics/marine litter.
