Free ferry on many routes in Northern Norway

Free ferry on many routes

From July 1st, taking the ferry on many routes in Nordland will be free of charge, both for vehicles and passengers.

- The guidelines come from central authorities, and compensate us for all routes that have less than one hundred thousand passengers annually. 15 ferry routes will be free from 1 July, explains section leader Tone Øverli.

Across fjords and out to islands: ferries are a vital part of traveling along the coast of Northern Norway. Due to the large distances in Northern Norway, many people enjoy spending their holidays here in a car. Below you will find some of the important car ferries, sorted by geography, south to north.

15 ferry routes free of charge

The passenger numbers used are from 2019, ie before the pandemic, and are therefore considered to give a correct picture of the traffic.

- In Nordland, there are currently 15 routes that will receive a free ferry. Also the islands that have less than 100,000 passengers, states Øverli.

All ferryroutes to all the islands will eventually be free of charge

In addition, the county council works closely with the government to make the conditions for living and doing business along the Nordland coast even better. The goal is that also ferry routes to islands without other road connections to the mainland, in the long run will be done for free.

- This time, room has been found to make the routes with less than 100,000 passengers free. And then work continues on getting the other stretch done for free. It is about providing conditions for using the whole of Nordland, and thus about creating a good framework for living and doing business in the districts and on the islands, says county councilor for transport and infrastructure, Monika Sande.
